How To Enable Windows Vista Drive Shares

May 20, 2008 by Milo Riano

Do you miss the Windows XP sharing method of adding the “$” at the end of the drive name to share it within members of a workgroup? Sharing used to be as simple as “\\mywinxppc\c$”.

That is no longer easily done in Windows Vista because it is blocked in the network and to be able to do these shares, follow the steps below:

1. Right-click the drive in the Computer window, and then click Share.

2. Click on “Advanced Sharing”

3. On the Advanced Sharing dialog box, click “Share this folder”. Specify the share name, permissions, and other settings as needed.

4. Close buttons until dialog box disappears
