How Well Do You Know Your Writing Clients?

ideabulb.jpgFreelance Switch has an excellent post called: Pizza-Guy Marketing – How To Turn A Slice Into A Lifelong Customer. The thrust of the article is that the more you know about your clients the more likely they are to become raving fans.

Of the main things to remember, four apply particularly to writing clients:

  • Contact mode: Does the client prefer e-mail, IM, cell, phone, smoke signals, in-person – getting a hold of a client in their preferred manner makes life easier for both you as the writer, and for your client.
  • Delivery mode: electronic, hard-copy, both… as freelance writers, we probably prefer delivering manuscript via email, but there are clients who want hard copy even if it means snail mailing.
  • Personal information: client’s age, marital status, birthday or other meaningful dates, hobbies, interests, sports, activities – although a birthday may or may not be important, the rest of the list not only helps us keep our clients happy, but tells us who their ideal reader is likely to be, which, in turn, shapes the writing.
  • Personality/culture: funny, serious, analytic, talkative, abrupt, efficient, rambling, creative, buttoned-down – this area of knowledge really informs our writing as well as our relationship with the client.

Read the entire post – it’s fun and full of helpful information.
