How You Should Interpret Negativity From The Interviewer

Have you ever been on an interview where the hiring manager or any other person that you interviewed with did something that gave you that “hey, that was weird” feeling?  Ever wonder what to do when you get that feeling?

Run for your life!

This happened to me on an interview years ago.  As it sat answering questions, I was picking up on this negative vibe from the two interviewers (strange glances between each other when I’d give certain responses etc…).  Of course I assumed it was my own paranoia since these were the leaders of a very successful organization.  On my second interview when I was taken around to meet the staff I’d be working with, my “tour guide” was even talking smack about my soon to be coworkers with another staff member, right there in front of me!  It was one of the most unfortable things I’ve witnessed in my professional life.  So, like a big dummy, I accepted the job completely ignoring my instinct.   Within 1 month of my start date I was nearly in tears every day because I’d found myself in a job with the most negative, back-stabbing people I’d ever worked with.  I won’t go into details about my experience because it doesn’t really matter.  The point was that the signs were there and I ignored them.

Don’t ever discount your gut feeling.  It’s usually right.

Have you ever been on an interview where something happened that gave you that “hey, that was weird” feeling?  How did you handle it?  If you took the job, did you find that the weird feeling you had on the interview translated into anything bad once you started the job?
