I actually agree with Bode Miller

From what I can tell, Bode Miller believes that the Olympics doesn’t necessarily exist to promote the best athletes in each sport and to which country will win the most medals. No, to him it’s more about the “thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”, and that means whether or not your the fastest or strongest person on earth, or just someone that’s overcome all the boundaries and desires to compete and the best you can personally perform.

Oddly enough, this may be one of the few things I believe I whole-heartedlyl can agree with Bode’s viewpoint.

The glory days of hapless British ski jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, who became an unlikely hero after the 1988 Calgary Olympics, or 1992 Senegalese downhiller Lamine Gueye have disappeared with far more stringent entry requirements.

British-based Ghanaian skier Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, dubbed the ‘Snow Leopard’ by his supporters, failed last month to qualify after a brave effort to reduce his points handicap by the deadline.

Mexico’s Hubertus von Hohenlohe, a flamboyant Olympic veteran at the age of 47, did make the grade only to be told by his national Olympic committee that they were not sending anyone.

Miller said the Games needed competitors like that.

“There are the stories like the Jamaican bobsled team, the guys from Mexico … Those kinds of things are inspirational to me just because they are different.”

That I believe is the true meaning of the Olympic Games! May we see all the best in humanity, at all levels over the next few weeks! …. and be inspired!

  1. [...] With notable international flavor, we figured it would be a great idea to foster a little intra-network rivalry. There’s a little USA-Canada hockey trash talk going on with a little philisophical analysis of the games as well. We even have Scott Goldblatt, Olympic gold and silver medalist from the USA in Athens 2004 and Sydney 2000 joining our network for this and future endeavors. [...]
