I Took A Job Out of Desperation – What Do I Do?

One of my clients called me yesterday to let me know that she is no longer working. She has been looking for a job in an industry she has interest in, however it has been very difficult for her to find a job. She had a job, but according to her, "I took the job out of desperation. It was a mistake." So, she quit. I found her comment about desperation interesting. Why? Because I know that when the bill collectors are calling, and there is a need for food, shelter and clothing, sometimes any job is better than no job. I definitely understand the urgency to take a job to stop the calls and to assist with staying on top of the bills that may be stacking up while you are unemployed.
I wanted to write a post about this desperation, because what I heard in her voice (my client) was exasperation with the whole process – from needing a job to taking a job that you are overqualified for to the frustration of finding the right job to quitting the job and beginning the cycle of needing a job again. What do you do when you find yourself in this vicious cycle?
1. Figure out what you enjoy doing, no matter how much you may/may not make
2. Determine that if you take a job, albeit out of desperation, that you will focus on performing at the highest level
3. Continue to pursue job opportunities that interest you – keep applying, keep interviewing, keep preparing
4. Keep bitterness and frustration far from you – it will hinder your ability to land the job you want
5. If you feel desperate to find a job, evaluate why you are feeling desperate. If you absolutely need to take the job to take care of basic needs, give yourself a timeframe that you will work the job. This will eliminate feelings of low self-esteem and feelings of being stuck.
6. If you do feel stuck – TAKE ACTION! Do something towards finding a job or the job you really want.
7. REMEMBER – Desperation means: a state of hopelessness leading to rashness. This is not an option. If you are going to take a job, choose to take the job to help you get to the next place you are going. Be Intentional! Choose to be there and allow it to be what elevates you into the job you are looking for. Sometimes you need a job to get a job!
