IBM Lotus Symphony

Another free office suite software for you guys. Yesterday, IBM announced a new line of product which will give you the power to create and share documents, spreadsheets, and presentations and it is called the IBM Lotus Symphony.

Reading this tech buzz from their site, I immediately downloaded the software and gave it a try. The tool works with Linux and Windows systems and delivers services quite similar to you other office suite. It supports many file formats like Microsoft Office files, Open Document Files, and outputting PDF files. It is both free for academic, personal and even for business use.

lotussymphony.png“IBM is committed to opening office desktop productivity applications just as we helped open enterprise computing with Linux,” said Steve Mills, senior vice president and group executive, IBM Software Group. “The lifeblood of any organization is contained in thousands of documents. With the Open Document Format, businesses can unlock their information, making it universally accessible on any platform and on the Web in highly flexible ways.”

Also last week, IBM and OpenOffice.org community, announced their partnership with IBM’s goal in innovating and promoting OpenOffice tools. “This will lead to a broader range of solutions and ODF-supported applications that draw from the OpenOffice.org technology,” according to their BUZZ entry.

What’s in it for you, businesses and developers?

IBM® Lotus® Symphony™ has something for everyone, like a community-oriented site with tips, a template gallery and support to help you succeed. Businesses can gain more control over spiraling upgrade costs, while still protecting, accessing and maintaining documents well into the future. And for developers, Lotus Symphony tools support Microsoft® Windows® and Office applications, which means you can get even more from your current investments.
