Identity Theft (or Just a Loan?) in Social Media

July 27, 2007 by Eric Eggertson

In a social media world where one of the top blogs is Perez Hilton (slight similarity to Paris Hilton?), and Fake Steve Jobs takes advantage of the real Steve Jobs’ tight lips, are there limits to the identity spoofing?

Chris Pirillo (cartoon figure)Technology whiz-guy Chris Pirillo found out someone has created a Pownce account in his name.

Pirillo complains about the lack of verification of a person’s identity when they set up accounts on social networks.

In Pirillo’s case, whoever set up the account has posted a few goofy comments, but hasn’t really gone to town on parody or satire.

Something tells me there aren’t a lot of Fake Eric Eggertsons out there…

(The illustration isn’t the real Chris Pirillo. That’s a drawing.)

  1. Parody… how far can people take it? Part of being a public persona, I suppose. Those of us in the B and C-Lists need not apply (but look out Scoble!).

Personally, the William Shatner profile on Twitter just cracks me up.

  2. One more thing – at least I’m no D-lister like that piker Ike. I doubt he’s even thought of ways that bloggers could spoof each other on the internet.

  3. Thanks for your comments, Geoff1 and Geoff2. I agree, that piker Ike isn’t smart enough to think of ways to spoof another blogger.

  4. Sarah Wurrey says:

This is the stuff that makes me cringe that my name is so inherently Googleable. I am the only Sarah Wurrey in the world; it’s a good thing I’m not famous! :-)
