Great comments! Yep the fact of the matter is that you have to use what works for you.

My big problem with FreeMind was that I couldn't export to Word (when I tried it). Since I use MM for starting documents, that was a must-have for me.

I've used both MindManager and FreeMind and like both. MindManager is more intuitive and easier to use from the start. However, FreeMind has been growing on me. Just when I think FreeMind is unable to do a particular function, I stumble upon it while using the software. Oh yeah, FreeMind is open source and little more affordable (like free) versus MindManager.

"Okay, I’ve tried FreeMind and I didn’t like it. I was spoiled already by MindManager from MindJet."

Quite the opposite of me then - I tried Mindmanager and never really got into it. I find Freemind faster and more intuitive - I use it almost as much as my word processor. It organises my world!

I definitely second the suggestion of using FreeMind (actually, this would be the 3rd, since Grigor recommended it to begin with).

One neat use of FreeMind: mapping your career networking. You can keep track of referrers this way. It gets a bit out of hand after a while, but it's neat to see how the branches grow.
