Good Monday morning readers!
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and on the eve of this presidential inauguration, I’m going to digress from the usual topic of this blog and dedicate today’s post to Dr. King and President-elect Barack Obama.
More than any other Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I think this particular day—Jan. 19, 2009—means so much to so many people because of the historical significance it represents. Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the dream he had before a crowd of thousands on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963. Tomorrow, a big part of Martin Luther King’s dream will be realized when Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th president of the United States.
If you’ve never heard Martin Luther King’s speech, “I Have a Dream,” take some time and listen to it today.
And then reflect on where we’re standing in history at this moment.
You just might get goose bumps like I did.

I was moved when I read this in this morning’s paper (from an article by David Espo and Ben Feller of the Associated Press entitled “Washington Welcomes Obama”):
“Children sang and spoke selected readings that recalled King, killed in 1968.
‘Martin Luther King walked so that Barack Obama could run,’ said one boy. ‘Barack Obama ran so that all children could fly,’ added another, standing a few feet away from the first African-American ever elected president.”
Hi Joanne,
Thanks for sharing that. I’m going to go look for that story. Very moving indeed—especially the last quote that you shared.

Thanks for helping me find that speech. I think I’ll have goosebumps right through tomorrow. What a tremendous moment!
