In pursuit of an Olympic Dream

Liz Podominick left the Minnesota women’s basketball program to pursue a spot on the U.S. Olympic track and field team. She is the fourth player that the team has lost in two weeks.

Podominick is a sophomore on the university’s track and field squad. She hopes to get in the U.S. Olympic Team and compete in the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

In track and field, Podominick was the first freshman in Big Ten Conference history to win both the outdoor shot put and discus titles in her rookie season. She was named Big Ten freshman of the year and went to the NCAA Championships in both events — placing 10th in the shot put and 17th in the discus.

Though she values the time she has played Basketball with the Gophers, she strongly feels that she has to consider her future since openly expressed her desire to be an Olympian. In order to achieve that goal, she believes that she has to start the proper training toward it.
