Indira Gandhi Prize Given to Bill Gates

The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development was given to Bill Gates on Saturday. Gates, who co-founded Microsoft and is one of the richest people in the world, was given the prize by Pratibha Devisingh Patil, the president of India.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was recognized for helping eliminate polio and prevent AIDS in the country of India. To date, the foundation has given more than $1 billion to health related projects and efforts in India.
Bill Gates gave a speech at the ceremony and commented about how India has encountered numerous health concerns but also pointed out that the country has responded with appropriate urgency.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the world. Its focuses are healthcare, ending poverty and education. The foundation has more than 700 employees and an endowment of more than $25 billion.
