Insitu Gets $250M Contract from US Military

Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing, recently received a $250 million contract from the United States federal government. The company, which specializes in unmanned aircraft systems, had previously gotten a contract from the Canadian government.

According to the Seattle Times, Insitu had total revenue in 2008 of less than $150 million, so obviously this is big news for the company that is based in the tiny city of Columbia River, Washington. With a population of less than 700, Columbia River relies upon Insitu for a lot of its income.

Insitu’s most known product is the ScanEagle drone, an unmanned aircraft that move and hover without being seen or heard. It has already been used by the United States military for about five years.

Founded in 1994, Insitu began its partnership with Boeing in 2002. The company hasn’t announced whether or not it will need to create more jobs to fulfill this order.

Insitu is located in Bingen, Washington a town on the Columbia River (not the town of Columbia River). Right across the river from Hood River Oregon. Hood River is always on the top ten list of places to live, see or vacation in. It has a valid claim as being the #1 windsurfing town in the world. Bingen is in the Heart of the Columbia Gorge less then one hour from Portland, Oregon
