iPhone In The Philippines

This news is a few days too late. Still I think it’s worth mentioning. My apologies I haven’t been able to post much the past few days. Been busy but I’ll write about that on another post.Elbert who is also the current chairman of PhilMUG (Philippine Mac Users Group) got an extremely pleasant surprise last week when his bro-in-law came home from the United States. He brought an iPhone with him as a present for Elbert. It’s enough to say that Elbert was stoked with the surprise.
But what good is an iPhone if you can’t use it because its not activated? Well the solution Elbert came up with was to activate the iPhone using AT&T’s prepaid phone service. He used a U.S. based debit card to fund it. After activating the phone he’s now able to use the iPod and WiFi functions of the iPhone. Granted he can’t make calls since the prepaid service doesn’t offer roaming, at least he has the other functions available.
I’m thinking in the next few months, someone will find a way to unlock the iPhone for use with other carriers. When that happens I’m sure Elbert will be first in line to unlock it.
Here’s a video of Elbert making the six o’clock news as the first person perceived to have an iPhone here in the Philippines.

well, thats a great news for me… but when and how can we know the exact time when the line of iphone will connected here in the philippines?
Hey Grace,
It’s still unclear when and which provider will carry the iPhone in the Philippines. People are saying it will be available 1st quarter up to the 1st half of 2008.
For now, all the iPhones here are unlocked/hacked versions. Some stores are actually selling these but at a very high premium.
