When you’re thinking about starting a small business one of your options could be to purchase a franchise. It can be an easy way to get a business started, with a proven business idea. A franchise may cost you more money upfront to get started, but once you’re up and running you also have a name behind you that may already be familiar with your customers.

Here are some pros and cons for buying a franchise:
- Pro~ It’s usually a proven business system. Other stores are already up, running, and making a profit with the same products and systems.
- Con~You’re usually required to pay for the franchise up front, which means higher start-up costs, and a large expense before your business is even off the ground.
- Pro~ Most franchises already have a brand built around them, so customers are familiar with the name.
- Con~ You have to obey the franchise rules. Most franchises have a set of rules and guidelines they expect their franchisees to obey. You’ll have less flexibility with your business, because it will have to conform to the uniform guidelines of the franchise.
Franchises vary greatly in their upfront fees, and their annual royalty payments. Some also have more rules than others. If you’re thinking about buying a franchise do your homework and explore all your options before you plunk down the cash.
