Is HTC Dropping Windows Mobile?

Smartphone developer, HTC, has been talking about their upcoming new device that is "better and more functional" than the iPhone and Palm Pre.
“We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market”.
I’ve been using my PPC-6700 which is manufactured by HTC and have been happy with it for almost 4 years now. Having a new phone would be nice, but it’s not worth the price for me to really upgrade it at this point. It still does pretty much everything I need a phone to do.
The iPhone is a nice device from what my friends say that have one, but I’m curious how much of its popularity is just because it’s an iPhone from Apple and it’s "cool" to pull one out of your purse or pocket and have everyone see you.
The key for me in any phone is functionality, reliability and ease of use.
My only real complaint about my PPC-6700 is the volume limit for both the receiver and ringer.
I bought my wife a new Palm Centro for a Christmas gift this year and she’s been happy with it. It’s taken a bit of an adjustment for me to re-familiarize myself with the Palm OS though, so having the Windows Mobile OS for me has been great.
The no-brainer synching between my phone and everything in Outlook has been perfect.

If the Windows Mobile team releases a whizbang WinMo 7 that a consumer will actually LOVE on its own merits, as well as go above and beyond with what the mobile OS can do, then there’s still hope.
However, I doubt it. Too bad, considering MS has a lot of potential to create a great mobile OS with the technologies they have, but can’t get their act together.
