Is My Opportunity to Grab a Zune Disappearing?

There was a recent post on the ZDNet blogs about whether or not Microsoft should ditch their Zune media player to the curb and stop trying?
The revenues dropped significantly in the fourth quarter of 2008, which the article shared is really only a fight for the 30% that’s not already taken by the Apple iPod.
The post had a couple of poll questions that I felt were interesting to take a look at the data as well.
- Should Microsoft drop the Zune? NO 60% / YES 40% (1483 votes cast)
- Do you own a Zune? NO 46% / YES 40% / NO, WANT ONE 14% (1676 votes cast)
My question to you my readers is why you do or don’t like Apple iPod over the Microsoft Zune?
Are you like me and just really can’t stand the associated software, in my case iTunes? The user-interface and intuitive design and functionality of the iPod is very nice. I don’t deny that. I was immediately impressed by how things just seemed to make sense when you were using it.
In my own personal experience though, I would give up a little bit of functionality to avoid having to install iTunes on my computer again.
How about you?

I was an iPod user for years always trying to find an iTunes substitute. It took me five minutes of playing with the first generation Zune that I bought for my wife to ditch the iPod and get a Zune.
The iPod is a nice looking device, but like most things Apple it is not usable. iTunes, at that time, was probably the worst piece of software I ever used. Like I said, it took five minutes to play with the Zune desktop software and the device to be sold.
Your opportunity isn’t disappearing – That CNET article is just a “Should-this-happen…?” based on some stuff.
I don’t understand – Do you want a Zune or not? I’m sure you’ve done your research on it, so is something holding you back from getting another iPod or getting a Zune? If you buy a current Zune (generation 2) and don’t like it, just return it. If you like it – keep it. It’s not that hard.
I’m not much of a PMP person, but I feel that I like the Zune more than the iPod. iTunes software is horrendous, having an iPod feels like being a cliche, and I like the individual features that the Zune has, that the iPod doesn’t.
