Is the cost of an ultraportable justifiable yet?

Last week I was talking about getting an Eee and what I’d put on it, as I was thinking about buying it more seriously I kept seeing ads for decent laptops for about the same price.
This, I thought, is a problem for the UMPC market. When you can get a close-out laptop for the same price, why bother?
Sure it would be small, light and cool, but at what cost?
I earlier wrote how ultraportable notebook computers can be a blogger’s best friend. I’ve been carrying my Asus Eee in my bag most anywhere I go, and I use it to do some work while waiting for the kids to finish their preschool classes, or when the wife goes grocery shopping. An ultraportable plus a public hotspot (or 3G connection via my mobile phone + Bluetooth) can do wonders.—2008 Should Be Year of the Ultraportable : The Blog Herald
This the quandary and barrier I think. I was all excited to have this cool little laptop (I have to change banks when I move and might get one as part of a deal with Royal Bank), but seeing a larger, more powerful machine … well you just have to ask yourself what’s the really goal here.
I’d love to have a cool little machine that I could just have stripped down for blogging and light image processing, but I can think of other things I’d like to invest in more(a terabyte NAS device would be cool).
Answer? No clue.
