Is your content really protected?

In talking about blogging on social networking sites or using them to get your content out there, one thing that isn’t brought up enough is the question, “Is your work protected?”

Thievery of user generated content is nothing new on the web, hell I have two blogs that are currently publishing everything I write here and trying to pawn it off as their own. However there are steps to fight against people that steal content through DMCA. Notices can be sent, ad systems can be taken down, and other punishments can be handed out using the proper channels.

On social networks though DMCA policy is pretty bad, if not non-existent. Recently plagiarismtoday.com ranked seven of the leading social networking sites and their DMCA policy. I found this entry to be an eye opening read.

This leaves the question, what avenues do you have to protect your content on these websites?
