Ivanovic Holds On, Federer Loses

July 31, 2008 by Erica

The number one women’s tennis player, Ana Ivanovic, took a little tighter grip on her ranking with a win at the Montreal Cup. Ivanovic nearly lost her crown achievement to fellow Serbian Jelena Jankovic but, with her second-round victory, she lives to enjoy another day at the top.

Third-ranked Maria Sharapova withdrew from the tournament with a shoulder injury and therefore won’t be making any strides towards another stint at number one.

On the men’s side – well – Roger Federer lost. Somehow that seems like a very commonplace thing to say. Maybe it’s because I’ve been saying it rather too often in the past weeks. Ivan Karlovic came out on top in two tiebreakers on the first and third sets after dropping the second set to the current-but-soon-to-be-not number one men’s tennis player.

So with all this unrest in the top ranks, who’s going to win the Olympics?

  1. Roger Federer is currently going through a rough patch of time, which is pretty natural for any player in any sports. Though his performance is disappointing, I do not see it the end of his career. He is a star player with sheer talent and skill, by which he can make a strong come back in the tennis court. I will not be surprised to see if Roger Federer can finish the year winning the US Open 2008 title.
