Jason Grilli vs. Jim Leyland

Jason Grilli and Jim Leyland

DING! Or I should say ZING! That’s after Detroit Tigers’ skipper Jim Leyland fired back to ex-Tiger Jason Grilli’s comments about players being let go after last season.

Grilli was traded to the Colorado Rockies a few weeks ago for a minor leaguer, or a bag of balls… whichever the Tigers think they can use more than Grilli. Not long after arriving in Denver, Grilli sounded off to USA Today, telling them that the Tigers’ chemistry was broken up after letting Sean Casey go.

Well, good ole’ Leyland caught wind of that comment and went off in the Detroit Free Press yesterday. “I really take offense to Jason Grilli’s thing about we lost Sean Casey. You’ve got to be (kidding) me. We lost Sean Casey. I mean, please. Come on.” But it gets better.

Leyland went on to say: “Jason Grilli ought to just worry about Colorado.

“Jason Grilli isn’t here any longer because Jason Grilli didn’t pitch good under pressure situations and didn’t pitch very well in Detroit.”

GAME OVER. Grilli should not even have a chance to comment after that last line by Leyland! Well, this is America, so of course Grilli can respond. He told the Rocky Mountain News, “I was simply asked about where the Tigers are and all I did was make a comparison to now and back then (2006) and said the roster has changed. I love everybody there. I never had issues with Jim or his staff.” Now he has no issues… I wouldn’t either after getting ripped by Leyland!
