Jeff Backus is signed for the long term with my infamous Detroit Lions. He is happy. No, that is not a misprint, he is really happy.
Players might not like camp, but they are willing to work hard if they know it is going to make them better. In his sixth year as the starting offensive left tackle, Backus believes there is a work plan that will improve the team.
It’s one reason he put aside any thought of leaving as a free agent after this season. Last month, Backus signed a six-year contract worth an estimated $40 million.
Backus was sold by what he heard from new head coach Rod Marinelli and his assistants — primarily line coach Larry Beightol and offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Special Note Jeff Backus has started 80 straight games at left tackle.
Now let’s not confuse Jeff for some Hall of Famer, but he is solid. For the Lions, right now is a good time to invest some big money in solid.
Fan Question Could Rod Marinelli and Jeff Backus start the winning tradition in Detroit?
