John Kremer, expert on book marketing has featured some great book covers on his blog. The post is called Great Book Covers and he’s right; these are dynamite.
Since your book’s cover is your book’s billboard, it’s important the design be eye catching. What tickles me about this selection of book covers is the variety. Each speaks about the book it represents, visually. A nifty and worthwhile trick.
I think my favorite is Facing the Moon, but that monochromatic look certainly wouldn’t work for many books.
Which one do you like best?

I liked Facing the Moon the best as well. It seemed like it could stand the test of time, whereas the one for Miracle Myx, or whatever it was, looked really outdated. The bright colors seem 90’s, and it looked like something you’d find in the most bargain bin.
I think it’s worth putting effort into a good design on the cover, too. They say not to judge a book by it’s cover, but everyone does; with all the millions of books out there, it’s tough not to notice a good design over a shoddy one.
Interesting you say bright colors are 90s… not sure I agree, which is what makes a horse race isn’t it…
I’d agree, you need a really catchy cover these days, but it seems the big houses are going with subtle, less “shocking” covers then the ones Kremer picked. I didn’t like the Mara Purl cover – but personal opinion is just that.
yes, we could get into an argument over taste, but we won’t… but it’s interesting to see how folks differ and there can be valuable info in that
