Jose Contreras of the Chicago White Sox asked to be sent to the minor leagues. According to a report on ESPN.com, the White Sox agreed with Contreras and decided to follow through with his wish. The 37-year-old from Cuba will soon report to the minors in an attempt to work through his struggles.
Over six starts this season, Contreras has an ERA of 8.19 and he’s given up 40 hits and 16 walks in 29.2 innings. Without much control of his pitches, Contreras has struggled to get anyone out.
Before the White Sox could send Contreras to the minors, he had to clear waivers. Considering that Contreras has more than $8 million left on his contract, that process was simply a formality.
In the minor leagues, Contreras will continue to start games and he’ll spend extra time trying to master his split-finger fastball. He will also work on spotting his pitches and his velocity.
To replace Contreras on their roster, Chicago called up Jimmy Gobble.
