Kevin Curtis – when your ship sails in

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Kevin crawls his way to a big payday

Kevin Curtis (James A. Finley, Associated Press)The biggest problem with free agency is Kevin Curtis.

Oh yeah, the guy is a problem.

Wait a minute, did Kevin do something like bring a lawsuit or something?

No, he signed.

What?

He signed a contract for an excessive amount of money.

So?

Well, he is not worth it.

Sure he is. They offered it to him. The Eagles offered it to him. They aren’t dumb. They were in the playoffs last year. They know how to put a team together.

You think so? Hmm, Philly lost Stallworth, so they went after Curtis. They were desperate and Curtis was the last somewhat bona fide receiver left. They overpaid and thus raised salaries for all worthless receivers.

My friend, RonB, was quick to point out, (after lamenting the fact that Kevin was not coming to Lions land), that the Eagles way overpaid for Curtis.

Curtis will get $9.5 million in guarantees and $8 million overall in the first year of the contract. He was seeking an increased role after playing behind Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce in St. Louis. The speedy Curtis is expected to assume the role Donte’ Stallworth filled in Philadelphia before signing with New England earlier this week. source

11 teams went after Curtis. Now Philly thinks he will magically go from being a number 3 receiver to a number 1 receiver. That does not happen very easily. Most number 2’s find it difficult to move up to number one. So now he is going to do it from a number 3?

Call me skeptical, but wait until Curtis is getting the best defender or the usual double team or has to make the pressure catch. It is just not that easy or more number 3’s would do it all the time.

The Eagles management had this to say:

“Kevin’s a guy that we’ve liked all along,” Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said.

“He’s got great speed and run-after-the-catch ability. Kevin’s a calm, smart guy that goes out and plays football. He definitely brings tremendous speed to our team.” source

The good thing for the Eagles is that Curtis has blazing speed and can become a deep threat if not the number 1 receiver.

  1. Ron B Free says:

As you said yesterday Jim: “freeagency is all about over-paying players to get them to come to your team”. But, taking into account the NFL salary cap you have to wonder what the other Eagle players are going to think of management giving this guy a key to the vault, especially when he is far from the best player on that team. I remember many years ago when the Pistons were coming off a couple NBA championships and Piston management went out and acquired Orlando Woolrich, gave him huge money instead of rewarding the players on the team that had given their hearts and souls to make Detroit a winner. It ripped that team apart.

Agreed or is it just greed.
    nuff said.

    Woolrich brought nothing.
