Kids Get Online Video

I showed Christine “Happy Slip” Gambito’s Season One DVD to my parents Christmas Eve. They couldn’t stand it. They’re too used to the conventions of offline video — 30 minute chunks, big casts, no community, et cetera. My doctor uncle couldn’t believe anyone would quit nursing to do this. Apparently, to some people, being an online video star is lower than being a “lowly paid nurse,” as Christine calls her former self.

These kids, on the other hand, totally get it — from the memetics to the monetization. Here’s their creative response to her Christmas video, complete with the beat.

Children immediately understand online video because they don’t have decades of offline video programming to unlearn. Today’s kids wonder why some phones have wires. Tomorrow’s kids will wonder why TVs don’t allow video responses.
