AIG Open Day 2

Former top tennis player, Kimiko Date Krumm, is making a comeback in this next season of tennis. She’ll be joining the ASB Classic field in Auckland.

Krumm, who is 38 years old, has been granted a wildcard for main draw of the WTA Tour event, which goes from January 5th to the 10th. It’s been 12 years since Krumm has made an appearance on the court outside of Japan.

Date Krumm won seven singles titles, reached the semifinals of Wimbledon, the French Open and the Australian Open, and was ranked as high as No 4 in the world, before retiring at the end of 1996.

Impressive! Krumm’s husband, German motor racing driver Michael Krumm, was the one who suggested she come out of retirement. And since then, she has gone from having no ranking to 189 in just 12 tournaments.

“I have once played in a tournament in New Zealand when I was in high school. But this is actually the first time playing in a WTA Tour tournament in New Zealand, so I am very excited to have this great opportunity,” said Krumm.

Wow, I love a good comeback story! I’ll be keeping an eye on this gal.
