David Lee of the New York Knicks was hoping to cash in this summer. However, due to his restricted free agent status, that is looking more and more unlikely. Instead, multiple reports have surfaced that Lee will sign a one-year contract with the Knicks.
As long as Lee plays well next season, this may actually end up being better for the power forward out of Florida. He’ll be an unrestricted free agent next summer and he will be one of the better free agents on the market in a summer in which many teams targetting.
Last season, Lee averaged 16 points, 11.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game in 34.9 minutes. He shot 54.9% from the field and 75.5% at the charity stripe. If he can stay healthy and have a similar season in the 2009-2010 campaign, Lee won’t have anything to worry about in next year’s free agency market.
Nate Robinson, another Knicks restricted free agent, may also sign a one-year contract and take a similar route.
