Laser Safety Zone For Bicyclists

This is a cool little gadget I found at Envirogadget.com. It’s a device for bicyclists that projects a green laser around them as they ride and if a car comes in to the “zone”, the laser projection turns red and horns alert the driver and cyclist that the zone has been compromised and it may raise a safety issue. Here is just one picture of the project. That’s right, this is not yet a production product but a concept that is being worked on.
The device projects an elliptical beam around the bike, which is roughly the size of a car. Essentially staying green when the cyclist is safe, and turning red when the driver is too close. Hopefully by making it easier to respect the space cyclists need to cycle safely, there should be fewer instances of harm caused to cyclists by dangerous drivers.
Created by industrial Designer Leonardo Manavella, this product will perhaps increase bicyclist safety, mainly in urban areas. While I find this to be a really cool concept, the original article mentions that the zone around the bicycle is about the size of a car. This size zone in places of high vehicle congestion is going to cause the alarms to go off more and it’s going to become an annoyance to a lot of people to include the cyclist.
