Small business owners often start out their businesses by listening to others and not learning the basics. As in any other endeavor, there is lots to learn, and you are the only one who can learn it. If you don’t want to rely on someone else to run your business, you need to learn the basics. For example:
- Creating a financial structure for your business
- Setting prices, billing and collecting money
- Web and technology installation
- Marketing strategies
- Demographic analysis
- Budgeting, break-even analysis, and financial analysis
- Creating a business plan
- And lots more.
Fortunately, there are many resources you can use to learn before, during, and after you start your business. It is never too soon to start, if you are getting ready to start a business. Here are some online resources that cost you nothing or next to nothing:
SCORE online courses. The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) has a series of online courses you can sign up for: SCORE Online Courses.
SBDC In-person courses and workshops. There are many Small Business Development Centers around the U.S., located at colleges and universities. They offer periodic training sessions and workshops you can take, most at no charge.
Your local community college. Most community colleges have small business training, computer skills training, and financial workshops available on a regular basis. Check to see which are coming up in your area.
Live Events – Mentoring and Coaching. American Express OPEN and Score are holding a series of events called Speed Coaching Events in several cities, continuing in May and June. If you live near one of these cities, you may be able to register and attend.
If you can’t find what you are looking for, keep looking. There are many opportunities out there for you to learn the ropes of starting a small business.
