Learning to Sell Great Ideas

“In the modern world of business, it is useless to be a creative original thinker unless you can also sell what you create. Management cannot be expected to recognize a good idea unless it is presented to them by a good salesman.” – David Ogilvy

I was looking for some inspirational management quotes, and I came upon this one from David Ogilvy, who many consider to be the father of modern advertising. I’ve found this is true; the best ideas are often the ones in the best packages, and are presented in the best possible light.

What do you do with those team members who have great ideas, but who for one reason or another just can’t seem to get their point across? What are your suggestions on how they can be better “salesmen” or at least presenters?

One thing you may want to mention to them is a barcamp. Barcamps only hold sessions when people are interested in the session, and if you can’t come up with a flashy name, folks probably won’t come to your session. During the session, if you’re not a good presenter, people can vote with their feet and walk out. Additionally, if your first session wasn’t good, it’s doubtful folks will come to your next session.

I’d love to hear your suggestions on how to help associates sell their ideas better. We can all learn something if we’re willing to share.

It’s said that we’re all in sales regardless of our profession, and I’m learning that’s true. My favorite sales advice comes from Mary Kay Ash (yes, that Mary Kay): “My advice to salesmen is this: pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, “Make me feel important.” Not only will you succeed in sales, you will succeed in life.”

Incidentally, if you’re looking for quotes on sales (or anything else), I’d invite you to check out my collection:
