The Public Service Electric and Gas Company announced this week that they’ll be test LED street lights in parts of New Jersey. LED technology is much more efficient than typical light bulbs. The test, which will involve 24 street lamps over the course of 6 – 12 months, will be reviewing the LED lights for energy consumption, reliability, light output, and quality.
LED lights are already used or being testing in Ann Arbor, Raleigh, Austin, and Toronto. Ann Arbor, in July of 2007, became the first US city to fully convert its downtown lights to LED lights, and the program is working out well. I suspect that in the next few months, we’ll see even more states begin to explore this lighting option.
