Looking good while being cheap

I just read a great post from Jason over at calacanis.com who recently talked about how to save money when starting a business.

saving money on startupsSome of the points I loved:

  • Don’t buy a phone system. No one will use it.  He says most communication is done in other ways, not via a phone.  I can’t agree enough.  My ‘phone system is a virtual PBX which rings on my computer – and sends me voicemails via email.  It’s awesome – and so much cheaper than a separate phone line and system for my business.
  • Find a PR firm or consultant (like me) instead of hiring a big name firm to handle everything for a major price.  You’ll save money, and get much of the same results.
  • Outsource what you can!

What other money saving ideas can you share?  I’d love to know!

A fellow business woman once passed on the tip to buy ink cartridges off of Ebay. She says many surplus stores will sell their wares on the auction site and you can find some really good deals.

I don’t need ink now but I did a simple search and found that she was right. Even with shipping, you end up paying much less than going to the office store.

In general, I recommend looking on Ebay and other such sites first for high priced items such as software and electronics. I recently got a slightly used but legal copy of Microsoft Office for 50% off the retail price.
