Loyalty to Brands
A Twitter from David reminded me of something I occasionally ponder about, the idea of being loyal to brands.
As far I can recall, I’ve been absolutely loyal to two brands only, meaning I’ve never bought another version of the product. The first is Heinz baked beans – nothing tastes the same, so I’ve never been tempted to change. The second is Macleans toothpaste, the only one I like. I even took packs and packs to the US to make sure I never ran out. I’d also suggest Tivo, since I replaced the hard drive instead of getting a new type and will probably do the same again.
There are a couple of other brands that I’m partial to, meaning I usually buy them but it does not matter if they are not there, I’ll grab something else. Fairy Liquid, Oxo cubes, Bisto gravy granules are in that list, but it’s not very large. You could also throw in Canon Cameras, as the last 3 have been Canon.
Everything else is negotiable. On price, on marketing, on what’s available at the time. On how I’m feeling. So, do you have any absolute brand loyalties or do other factors come into play.

I have a huge loyalty to Coke, particularly Diet Coke with Lime. I won’t drink Pepsi (yuck!) and if there is no Coke available, I’ll drink water. If they stop making Diet Coke with Lime, I’m not sure what I’ll do.
My other loyalty is to Dove Dark Chocolate. Has to be DARK chocolate, and Dove in particular. Milk chocolate is not chocolate, in my opinion.
Otherwise, I change my loyalties when I find something new and better.
Thanks for asking for my opinion.
Interesting! Definitely with @Jean about the Coke, for me it’s Diet Coke or nothing. After buying a Mac a few years ago I’d only ever buy an Apple if only so I never have to use Windows again. Struggling to think of much else I’m particularly loyal to, people even change their banks nowadays which would have been pretty much unthinkable 10 years ago. I suppose non- brand loyalty keeps companies on their toes which is good for the consumer.
I’m probably in a minority in that I never drink Coke, never drink a cola, very rarely drink pop at all. I can’t stand the flavour of cola.
Three things: Kraft Mac & Cheese, Heinz ketchup and Miracle Whip. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything else. But I won’t buy any other version of those three.
Not hugely brand-loyal to anything — except Macs. I love my Mac. As a result of our Mac, we have a Mac laptop as well, and an iPod Touch. And Nathan’s hot dogs, now I think about it…
@Rachel: I don’t drink hardly any soda, either. Every couple of months I’ll have a diet something when the mood strikes.
I’m not really a brand person – usually go for the most economical or whatever is on hand.
I actually took a walk around my apartment to see if there is anything that I only buy one brand – found it!!
Nyquil – I’ve used it ever since it was introduced on the market over 30 years ago (not every day of course!!)
:)
I don’t like the taste of any of the knockoffs and nothing seems to work as well!
I have a long list of brands that I’m loyal too. I’m a brand manager’s dream. LOL. Here are a few off the top of my head.
- Becel Margarine and Canola Oil
- Heinz Ketchup
- Miracle Whip
- Dove Unscented Soap
- Mazda
- Second Cup Latte (sorry Starbucks… I buy into your philosophy but there’s something in your lattes that gives me an allergic reaction.)
