Luck = Fn ( Work + Risk + Motivation + Opportunities)

Since most of us, as rational human beings, don’t fully comprehend what luck really is, I’ve decided to break it down into several of the aspects that make up “luck”. By playing around with these variables you will have the chance to maximize your “luck potential”.

I propose the model above to create luck potential within a business, ending up in greater profits and a more valuable brand. The four dimensions are: Work, Risk, Motivation, and Opportunities. I’ll go into some detail with each of it. Let’s see:

  • Work: This is a very important dimension (although there is no rank within my function). By this medium, you can create the right situations to make sure that luck will present itself. The harder you try in this variable, the more “lucky spots” you will get.
  • Risk: Risk is something that goes hand by hand with work. The harder you work, more risky decisions will present to you. You will have to take risky decisions that might increase your risk, but usually by taking this chances you will learn and it will help you get better in the future.
  • Motivation: This is a very important internal aspect to my model. If you trust yourself to do the best job possible and have a right and straight vision in your mind of what you want to accomplish you will have an incredible drive to wards achieving the goal. Being motivated doesn’t always mean to stay on track 100% of the time, it means that you always find a way, when you’re up and when you’re down.
  • Opportunities: The variable most related to “pure luck”. Opportunities present themselves randomly in life. Take them when you can, otherwise they will never come back around. Don’t double think the opportunities that have a promising future, it might end up being your lucky break.

In my life, luck is something that is always present, but perhaps not in the almost “magical-way” we usually think it is; rather, I believe that we create our own destinies and the luck in them. Work those four areas whenever you’re starting a business, growing a business, or giving life to a brand, it will give you enough luck potential to keep you going.

Note: Always remember that luck, like any other thing in life, is nothing without its opposite. When you’re up, it’s only cause you know how it feels to be down. When you’re being lucky, appreciate it and know that like everything else in life, “…this too shall pass”…

    Nice quote on the subject, Brian.

    I love how the use of the word “design” can (& does) imply many different things, depending on who is reading the word (Engineer, designer, marketer, business owner, etc).

    Thanks,
    Ron E.
