Sittting and listening doesnt mean formulating a response in your head while you wait for the other person to take a breath. It means simply listening and giving their words some devoted and considered thought before responding. [...]</p>

Boy, do I agree with your post. I particularly appreciated the comment about how you can expect your employees to be skeptical at your initial forays into better listening. They will be so used to the old manager that they will have difficulty seeing change. One technique I've seen leaders use is to tell people when they're trying to make an improvement in their style. It requires some courage because they're putting themselves out there, but it helps employees notice small improvements sooner - and prevents backsliding due to lack of positive feedback.

You have touched on something that I seem to be constantly working on. I can occasionally be very bad at doing the basics like turning away from the screen and establishing good eye contact when a co-worker or staff member is seeking my assistance or input. I have even gone so far as to share this "problem" with several staff members so they can politely remind me when I am not giving them my full attention.
Acknowledging this short-coming to members of my staff has helped me keep my focus where it belongs and has made me more approachable.
Your post just serves as another reminder and one that I should probably read every few months to stay on track, as a matter fact I'm gonna add it to my calendar right now.
