Managment: Are you resolute in your resolutions?

January 10, 2008 by David Zinger

We are now into our second week in 2008. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Are you still on track with them or do they seem as far away as Resolute Bay, one of Canada’s northernmost communities and one of the coldest inhabited places in the world, with an average yearly temperature of minus 16.4°C?

Click here to watch a  short video from the Harvard Business Review based on street interviews with 30 managers in Boston on their 2008 workplace resolutions. The two major themes for managers were:

  1. Managers want to create better work/life balance.
  2. Managers see talent management as a pressing need for 2008.

The root of resolution is resolute which means:

firm in purpose or belief; characterized by firmness and determination; “stood resolute against the enemy”; “faced with a resolute opposition”; “a … unhesitating: characterized by quickness and firmness; “his reply was unhesitating”.

How is your resolve? Here are a few questions to ask yourself – I also strongly encourage you to write some of your response in the comments so we can learn from your perspective and experience:

  1. Do you make resolutions?
  2. What are your resolutions for 2008?
  3. Are you still on track with your resolutions?
  4. How do you develop, maintain, or enhance resolute actions and attitudes?

  2. Lilly Holmers says:

I used to make resolutions every New Years. None of them ever stuck with me. I’ve learnt a new technique that is simpler and more effective than setting resolutions, thanks to my friend Marcus Hochstadt. I just substitute the word “try” with the word “do”. It does wonders.
