Marathon Scenario for Windows Vista

iTWire is right on target when it said that Windows Vista sales is going to start as a slow burning one. There is nothing wrong with Windows Vista but there is definitely something wrong with the hardware requirements and to get the full experience that comes with Vista one should have a high end box.
I am using a P4 3.0 GHz and 2GB RAM to run Windows Vista RC1 hosted on a virtual PC and I am not satisfied with the performance (very slow). Although I also have Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Ms Office 2007, Ms Visual Studio 2005, VSTS and SQL Server 2005; but c’mon, don’t tell me I can only use Windows Vista on my box? That means I have to spend big bucks to enjoy Vista and become as productive or more as I am now. I definitely understand the reason for high specs but budget wise, it is not my priority and my sentiments is probably the same for most people/companies.

It’s just that these other editions were not taken up by the general public in numbers anywhere near plain ol’ Windows XP, despite Microsoft’s desires for this to happen, although it has to be said that over the past couple of years, the Media Center Edition of XP has enjoyed an excellent growth rate with consumers keen to experience digital media and television through their Media Center computers.
In the end, the Windows Vista sales is going to be a long marathon to surpass XP rather than a sprint race that could happen in a years’ time.
I’m using a Core 2 Duo with 2GB of DDR2 ram and a ATI x300 – and Vista runs perfectly. Aero runs as smooth as you would expect.
You actually expect Vista to run well on the ageing Pentium 4 platform?
What else after Vista do you run with your Core 2 Duo that makes it run perfectly well? Is it inside Virtual PC with MOSS 2007 as mentioned above? I throw in 1.4GB of Ram on a Virtual PC with MOSS 2007 using old Windows on P4 and it runs on minimum performance.
I would be interested to know if Core 2 Duo is enough for my development environment with Windows Vista.
I know it’s a stretch to expect Vista to run well on P4 especially with development tools I use but my dilemma is whether to buy a new box just for Vista when in fact my current setup is good for another two years.
