Marbury is not the Answer for the Celtics

The worst kept secret in the NBA is the fact that the Boston Celtics are waiting for the New York Knicks to buy out Stephon Marbury so that he can be signed to their squad. The defending champion Celtics apparently think Marbury can help in their efforts of back-to-back.

However, Stephon Marbury is not the answer. Last season, the Celtics signed veteran point Sam Cassell late in the season and he played well down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs.

Marbury, like Cassell, is a veteran point guard. But the comparisons stop there. When the Celtics signed Cassell, he had championship experience, a reputation for being clutch and he’s such a good teammate that it’s a lock that he’ll eventually become a head coach in the NBA. Marbury, on the other hand, is the opposite.

He has very limited experience when it comes to winning. His reputation is that he’s a malcontent who isn’t happy unless he’s the center of attention. And there aren’t many ex-teammates that can vouch for Marbury being anything else other than a locker room cancer.

Signing Marbury would send the Celtics in the wrong direction. What Marbury can help with on the court is overshadowed by the chemistry risk. If Boston does end up signing him, that will be great news for Eastern Conference rivals Cleveland Cavaliers and Orlando Magic.

  1. Donahue j says:

Now that has to be the dumbest opinion that I’ve read in a while. Marbury is a good player. He can help come off the bench during the playoff and he’s not as old as Sam..

  2. The only reason this will be good for the Celtics is that they will be able to sign him at veteran minimum. Marbury would certainly sure up the Celtics bench and they will need it because the Cavs have a good bench as well. It’s hard to say how much of a cancer he would be to their team, however, historically most of his beefs have come with coaches or the organization and not players. I’m guessing the Celtics would like the taste of sweet success one more time and would take the risk to sign Marbury.
