Marc Bulger is gone but not Frerotten

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Marc is down after taking a ribbing from his teammates

Marc Bulger (US Presswire)Marc Bulger, the QB on a mighty role last year, even briefly appearing as my Fantasy Team Quarterback, is heading towards the bench.

Yeah, you remember last year when Marc could do no wrong.

Tory Holt was on my Fantasy Team last year and caught ball after ball and scored a slew of touchdowns. Tory had 10 touchdowns last year and caught 93 balls.

To top it off, Stephen Jackson caught 90 balls, 3 of them for touchdowns.

Marc had a decent 92.9 QB rating with 24 TDs and only 8 interceptions.

It was a salary year for Marc Bulger and it was a terrific one. Everybody wanted Marc in the off season.

Reportedly my Lions wanted Marc and GM Matt Millen was said to be courting him. St. Louis had to respond and respond they did, but respond back Marc has not.

Bulger, a two-time Pro Bowl player, signed a six-year, $65 million contract extension in training camp. He has thrown four interceptions the last two weeks and was 11-for-24 for 114 yards and an interception in Sunday’s 35-7 loss to the Cowboys, the first sub-50 percent passing game of his career. source

But maybe there is more going on here than a quarterback suddenly going flat.

All season, Bulger has insisted he was healthy enough to play. It’s unclear how much time Bulger will need to heal after injuring the ribs while being sacked six times in the second week of the season against the Panthers.

“I was never going to pull myself out, I know that much,” Bulger said. “It’s real easy to play hurt when you’re winning, but it’s just not in me to pull myself out when we’re 0-4.

Bulger going to the bench is not all that happened. Greg Olsen, offensive coordinator, is sort of going to the bench too. He will be moved up to the booth and Coach Linehan will call the plays.

Gus Frerotte

The replacement for Marc Bulger will be Gus Frerotte.

Gus played briefly for the Detroit Lions and when he left it was popular to say Gone but not Frerotten. Thus, the above title.

Gus is a journeyman quarterback that occasionally delivers a big time performance. He is capable of getting the job done in the short run, but not as a full time all season starter.

The 36-year-old Frerotte started 15 games in 2005 for Miami, where Linehan was the offensive coordinator at the time. Bulger will be Frerotte’s backup against the Cardinals (2-2) on Sunday.

“He said, ‘We’re going to switch things around and let’s go, let’s see what you’ve got,”‘ Frerotte said. “I said, ‘I’m ready.’ We’ve made several changes this week and hopefully it’ll show up on Sunday.”

Frerotte also had success stepping in for injured Daunte Culpepper with the Vikings in 2003 when Linehan was the offensive coordinator there. That led to his deal with the Rams.

“He’s a proven quarterback,” Linehan said. “Even better yet, he understands his role and he knows what he’s being asked to do.”

Why does it seem to happen? Sign the big deal and fall flat on your face.

Is it a mystery or the natural order of things?

Let’s hope Marc’s ribs get better and that is all that it is, because with Stephen Jackson already out with a groin pull and St. Louis not exactly a defensive powerhouse, they need Marc back in action.

When he is healthy, Marc Bulger is one of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL.
