Maria Sharapova Wins Tokyo Title

October 5, 2009 by Jeanne Dupuis

It might not have been the glamorous victory that she wanted but after opponent Jelena Jankovic bowed out due to an arm injury, Maria Sharapova captured the title at the $2 million Pan Pacific Open.  She won the event back in 2005.

It’s not like she was given the win, though.  She was already ahead 5-2 in the first set when the match was abruptly halted by Jankovic.  This is the first time Sharapova has won a title since Amelia Island in April 2008 since she was forced to take 10 months off due to a shoulder injury.

Sharapova collected $350,000 with the win.

  1. It is indeed a great come back from Maria Sharapova. She was out of the game because of injury and in her first come back tournament she made it to the finals. The sad news is Jankovic out of the game now.
