Today, the United States remembers Dr. and Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., mostly for his huge influence on making racial segregation illegal. His “I have a dream speech” is, perhaps, the most recognizable. You can listen to it here and read it here. A search on his name will bring up more.
One of the things that often gets lost in the recognition of King is that he was also a proponent of non-violence. Jessica McElrath, About.com Guide to African-American History, offers information on King and on his non-violent philosophy.
