Maxwell made quite a name for himself with his debut album, Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite (1996). With singles like “Sumthin’, Sumthin’” and “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” the album sold more than 500,000
copies, was certified double platinum and even earned him a Grammy nomination.
After releasing three more albums (MTV Unplugged, Embrya and Now), Maxwell took left the music scene for eight years but with his upcoming BLACKsummers’night (available on July 7, 2009), he’s ready to step back into the limelight.
In a recent interview with Jet magazine, he said that he’s “grateful that people didn’t forget the music” and added that people were wondering “whatever happened to Maxwell? Is he OK? Is he sick? Is he on drugs? Where is he?” I have to admit that I wondered the same thing.
In response to all of the queries he says: “I don’t really put power into that. It’s just what people do and there’s no way I can control that. I can’t stand up at every moment and say ‘this true and this is not.’ There aren’t that many hours in the day to do that.”
