McEnroe to Sell Warhol Portrait for Charity
Despite all the excitement of Wimbledon whirling around us, I wanted to take a quick break and focus on something else for a bit: John McEnroe, Tatum O’Neal and Andy Warhol to be exact.
McEnroe is planning to auction off a portrait of him and his ex-wife O’Neal at Sotheby’s in London during the Wimbledon fortnight. The portrait was done by Warhol right after the pair were married in the mid-1980s. The high profile couple parted ways a decade later and now, with another decade elapsed, McEnroe is parting ways with the portrait.
The piece is expected to bring upwards of $600,000 and all the proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that provides housing through the work of volunteers.
Now. If only McEnroe would add a little extra oompf to the pot and dedicate a day or two of his life to joining those volunteers and swinging a hammer on a rooftop somewhere.
