McNair Had Affair Because Of Retirement?

Steve McNair, former pro NFL quarterback, was shot and killed by his mistress on July 4th. One sociologist has given his reasons for why McNair was seeing his another woman. Apparently, it all has to do with his retirement.

Steven Ortiz, an associate professor of sociology at Oregon State University, says that many professional athletes feel kind of lost after they retire and act out of character. He has spoken with the wives of many pro athletes, several of whom said, “their husbands behaved in ways that were completely contradictory to the way he used to behave during his career.”
While I understand that leaving a sport in which you excel to a “ordinary” life can be stressful, isn’t this just justifying the fact that McNair had an affair? Is it reasonable to give reasons why he would have an affair, when his wife and children are grieving?

I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be difficult to retire from such a high profile position, but I am saying that being sad or even depressed doesn’t justify being a cheater.
(nor do I think McNair deserved to die, but he was a cheater)
Sarah,
You’re so right on both counts. Nothing justifies cheating. And McNair didn’t deserve to die.
So sad for his family.
