Apple announced yesterday its new iPod offerings. All the iPod models received a refresh or a redesign. To add to that, Apple announced an new iPod model. Bringing the iPod offerings to 5 models.
The iPod Shuffle was refreshed. Apple introduced a more subdued color palette. The iPod Shuffle now comes in 5 colors namely silver, light blue, light green, lavander and red. The red version is the Product Red version of the iPod Shuffle. It, along with the iPod Nano are Apple’s contribution to the Product Red campaign. The Shuffle comes in 1GB and is priced at $79. Complete specs here.
Next up is the iPod Nano which received a total makeover. The most notable feature of the latest iPod Nano model is the ability to now play videos. Apple said that most consumers of its most popular product requested for the ability to play video. So they heeded their customers wants. The Nano can now play video on its 2″ screen. Small you say? It might be but as Apple pointed it out, the Nano is their product which has the most pixel per square inch display that they’ve ever shipped. The Nano sports a 204 pixel per inch screen that gives a 320×240 resolution same as the iPod 5th generation.
Games can now be also played with the iPod Nano. It ships with 3 games bundled. Vortex, iQuiz and Klondike. Additional games can be bought at the iTunes store for $4.99.
Other features also include photos, calendars, contacts as well as a new enhanced interface which includes the addition of the coverflow view. Now, Nano users can enjoy coverflow as well.
The Nano comes in 5 colors silver, light blue, light green, black and the Product Red version. It comes in 2 capacities 4GB which is only available in sliver and an 8GB model in all colors. Prices are $149 for the 4GB and $199 for the 8GB.
The iPod we all know and love now has a new name. It’s now called the iPod Classic. Well because it’s simply that, a classic. The new iPod Classic still does what the previous model does but in new “clothes” and bigger capacity. The smallest model is an 80GB version which is thinner than the previous 30GB model. The higher model sports a whopping 160GB hard drive. More than enough for your digital media library.
Like the iPod Nano it also sports the enhanced interface. The iPod Classic comes in two colors. Silver and Black. It now also sports an all metal enclosure. Prices are $249 and $349 respectively. Complete specs here.
The big surprise (or not) is the introduction of the 5th iPod model (the 4th being the iPhone). The iPod Touch is an iPod that sports the same multi-touch interface of the iPhone. It’s basically an iPhone sans the phone and messaging functions.
It comes in 8GB and 16GB versions. WiFi is built-in and so is the mobile Safari web browser. The YouTube app also makes its way to the iPod Touch.
The iPod Touch is a tad shorter and thinner than the iPhone. It does share the same design cues as the iPhone and from afar it’s actually hard to tell the difference.
The iPod Touch has up to 22 hours of audio playback and 5 hours of video playback.
The iPod Touch sells for $299 and $399 each. It only comes in one color.
These four new products together with the iPhone compose the new iPod family. Check them out.
