Markets are closed on Memorial Day, and with good reason. Memorial Day is a day to recognize those who sacrificed their lives in service of their country.
On this Memorial Day, I thought it would be fitting to follow the lead of Forbes Magazine. At the end of every issue, I thoroughly enjoy reading the quote page “Thoughts On the Business of Life.” In the May 25 special issue, the quotes were about aging and death.
Enjoy the quotes and the holiday, but remember, Memorial Day is more than just a day off.
“Better a noble death than a wretched life.” – Yiddish proverb
“We usually meet all of our relatives only at funerals where somebody always observes: ‘Too bad we can’t get together more often.’” – Bernard Berenson
“You end up as you deserve. In old age you must put up with the face, the friends, the health, and the children you have earned.” – Fay Weldon
“Death, the terror of the rich, the desire of the poor.” – Joseph Zabara
“I wanted a perfect ending. Now I’ve learned, the hard way, that some poems don’t rhyme, and some stories don’t have a clear beginning, middle and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next. Delicious ambiguity.” – Gilda Radner
“All good is hard. All evil is easy. Dying, losing, cheating, and mediocrity is easy. Stay away from easy.” – Scott Alexander
“I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the great ordeal of meeting me is another matter.” – Winston Churchill
