Michael Phelps Caught Smoking Pot | Your Thoughts?

Michael Phelps6356.JPG Olympic Gold Medalist, Michael Phelps is in the spotlight recently for using drugs. Not the performance enhancing type, though. Photos of Michael Phelps smoking marijuana out of a small water bong. Instead of denying it, Michael admitted to the “wrong-doing” and said “It will not happen again.”.

I’m not condoning drug use, but the guy is 23 years old and things like this are bound to happen. I don’t care how many gold medals a person wins, they don’t come with maturity or an owners manual that says what you are or are not supposed to do now that you are an Olympic icon and role model. He’s human. We all make bad judgement calls and if this comes back to bite him in the tail by ending or postponing his career in swimming or being dropped by his sponsors, then it’s on him. We all have skeletons in our closet. He was just stupid enough to let one out in public in an age where you never know when you might be photographed. Perhaps if it was a narcotic I would have slightly different thoughts on it, but it’s Marijuana. In a statement regarding the photos, Phelps said this.

“I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Should Michael Phelps be stripped of his medals or banned from the Olympics because of this photo? Not in my opinion. Surface photos or proof of the guy using performance enhancing drugs and then ask me again. What are your thoughts on this subject?

  1. Lance says:

I think it’s ridiculous that anyone would even consider stripping him of his medals. The alcohol is by far the more dangerous substance and no one is crying about him getting drunk.

I think everyone could use a little puff every now and then.

  2. Jensen says:

On one hand I don’t think pot smoking is all that bad (better for you than drinking yourself to death!). On the other hand, with our prudish society and with the legions of young people using Phelps as a role model, maybe he should be held to higher standards, especially if he is making money off of and actively encouraging young people to emulate his other actions.

Bottom line: I think he’s being punished enough just by the media outcry. If he does it again (or really, gets caught in the public eye doing it again) he probably deserves whatever he gets as long as he is personally benefiting from being portrayed as a role model for young people.

To comment about our American Olympic Hero, I would just like to say that let the boy smoke his weed. He has even more of my respect if he can still manage to be the fastest human in water out of the rest of the world and still manage to smoke weed here and there. Now, I must say he is a jackass for not being more careful.

  4. Colin says:

Michael was stupid to try the pipe in public where there was always a risk of being photographed and of having some jerk publish the photos. He should have experimented in his own locked bedroom or should not have experimented at all.

  5. Cretic says:

I think that this is ridiculous how some people think that smoking pot is a reason to take away all this young man has worked for in his life. One bad decision and all is lost? I mean yes I wouldn’t want my kids to look at Michael Phelps and see that its ok to smoke anything but Michael is at an age were he can make that decision and as far as I’m concerned his body has beaten all records of all swimmers in the world his body is of the healthy standards that I would like my kids to have, as long as privately in his home and not in public I think Michael is a big boy and can make good healthy decisions that he has always made. Smoking is NOT acceptable but this young man deserves some credit. There are many young men out there who are driving their lives into the ground with drugs and pot but I think Michael is quite far from that stage.

  6. Colin says:

Sure it was a private party, but it was not in his home. He was not “street wise” enough to know that celebrities attract attention. He attracted the attention of a dork with a camera and the rest is history. His punishment should have come from his family and close friends who should have reprimanded him by saying, “How could you have been so stupid?” Unfortunately, sponsers reserve the right to cancel endorsement contracts, but, as with all of us, when it hits home in the wallet he will learn soon enough.

  7. wuilber says:

i think that he is tire of swimming and needs a rest of that skunky trees to paralyzed his body for the moment(aint nothin wrong with smoking herbs)
but his wrongdoing for not passing it to the left ahahahah

  8. wuilber says:

    its ok to soke weed
the only wrongdoing here is that he didnt pass the skunky trees to the left

  9. Scott says:

Apparently it effects your punctuation and spelling though.

  10. john smith says:

smoking weed is more than exceptable, it is good. there is nothing wrong with it and it is better for you than alcohol
