Michael Vick and the rebuilding Atlanta Falcons

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Bobby Petrino asked 3 question when hired. We lost to the Lions? Really? We did?

Coach Bobby PetrinoThe best part about the NFL is the way they have structured the salary cap and luxury tax.

No, your intrepid author is not just babbling about nothing. Think about it, dynasties take excellent management (see Patriots), weak teams can rise up in a hurry (see Saints), teams are punished for making stupid moves (see my Lions, if you can take it).

Say you want to sign a couple of tackles. Maybe you have 8 mill left of cap room. You spend 6 mill to get a pretty good tackle. Now you only have 2 mill left. So you have to pass on the middle of the road tackle that wants 4 mill and go with a promising rookie that can live with 2 mill.

Just how do they live on only 2 mill? :)

Atlanta Falcons – Needs upon needs

This is draft time and free agency time in the NFL. The The Atlanta Falcons have a lot of needs, so let’s break them down.

Atlanta Falcons
Team needs: DB, DE, OL, LB, K
Overall pick/round: 8 (1), 39 (2), 44 (2), 75 (3), 109 (4), 121 (4), 133 (4), 149 (5), 185 (6), 244 (7)

First off, the Matt Schaub trade to the Texans helped Atlanta move up two spots in the draft. They should have a shot at the highly sought after LaRon Landry, the LSU Safety.

They might also go for Levi Brown.

OL: New head coach Bobby Petrino informed the team’s scouts that he preferred larger, more physical blockers who also still had enough footwork to move in space. They could select tackle Levi Brown at No. 8. If not, look for them to address this area with one of their two second-rounders and then again later in the draft.

Having watched the Falcons last year, they could go for just about anything. This is a team that lost to my Lions?!?

They have a PR nightmare going on with Michael Vick. Who knows how they will handle that, but Vick did have one of his better seasons and you can tell he is getting better.

They have a new coach in Bobby Petrino. It is rare for new college coaches to do real well in just starting out in the NFL and the Falcons have an up hill climb anyway.

There have even been suggestions that Petrino likes Adrian Peterson in the draft, because Warrick Dunn has been around for 10 years and Jerious Norwood is not his kind of back.

Could Peterson fall to the 8th pick and end up in Atlanta? One mock draft has Peterson going 7th. Still it seems unlikely.

The Falcons are resting their fate on Michael Vick and even went out and got veteran receiver Joe Horn to help him out.

Bobby Petrino will have to pull a few rabbits out of his hat to get this team into contention.

NFL Football Fan Question Can Petrino improve this team?

As always, any NFL Football related comments are welcome.
