Microsoft Assures Xbox Will Be Around

Lot’s of activity in the news and blogosphere over the past few days and week suggesting that Microsoft will shift production focus to the Xbox 360 and away from the original. As someone who would have an Xbox 360 right now if it had been more widely available, I can assure you I’d love to see Microsoft step-up their production of the 360 to meet the demand. However, I don’t see Microsoft ditching the original unit anytime soon.
Sony has continued to make money of selling the original PlayStation right next to PS2 in retail outlets. Not only did they continue selling their old unit, but even redesigned it to give it a fresh look. I believe this is good marketing. As early adopters shift their interest to the newer consoles there will be others who would still like a good, entertaining game system.
The other opportunity that I think Microsoft could take advantage of would be to enable owners of old Xbox units to use them as media center extenders. Consoles that would work in cooperation with the new Xbox 360 and any PC equipped with Media Center.
