Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Live OneCare
Windows Live OneCare subscribers currently enjoy, or not, the benefits of always-on virus, spyware and malware protection, centralized backup to keep personal information safe, and management features to keep PC’s optimized and running smoothly. Over the last couple of years OneCare has received severe criticism from users and software security companies alike. While the former complained that this security solution hogs system resources severely, the latter accused it of failing security product tests and non-adherence to industry standards, which Microsoft has been notorious of.
Microsoft has finally lowered its gear. It has “decided to phase out Windows Live OneCare and will discontinue retail sales of Windows Live OneCare subscription service beginning June 30, 2009.” What they intend to do is lure more n00bs by offering a toned-down version of a security solution for free of cost by the second half of 2009.
We haven’t seen it yet, but I don’t have high hopes about the new offering working either. Security is an important issue for every PC connected to the Internet, and you are better off buying it from elsewhere than expecting it from Microsoft for no cost.
Read the official press release, “Microsoft Announces Plans for No-Cost Consumer Security Offering: New anti-malware solution will broaden PC protection and help improve Windows experience.” Isn’t it a beautiful title? Not the post’s but the press release’s.
